Laurent Nicolas & David Nicolas (Numero 6)
At the age of 21, after sitting an entrance exam, David was accepted into the ”Gobelins de Paris”, School of animation where he studied for 3 years. He acquired a basic knowledge of animation and briefly started to work on 3D animation. With the help of his computer, he taught himself how to make his first short films in 2D animation.
Painting, the designing of record covers, and animated series are his principal activities. In collaboration with Laurent, his brother, he directed an animated series ”Les Lascars” on the subject of housing estates in the suburbs, which was bought and broadcast by CANAL+, Channel 4 and a German channel. David & Laurent then went on to direct an animated short film entitled ”Pierre le cosmonaute”. Shortly after finishing this film, they signed with Partizan Midi Minuit with the aim of developing their graphic skills on diverse projects. This has certainly been the case. Their fantastic music promo entitled "Starlight" for the group Supermen Lovers was very well received, being selected for many festivals and the French "Victoire de la Musique 2002" Awards. This was followed by a second music promo for Super Fury Animals entitled "It's not the end of the world" which won the special jury prize at the prestigious Imagina 2002 Festival and a silver at D&AD. After completing a UK campaign for the radio station Capital FM David & Laurent have worked on a number of large advertising campaigns including a Halifax commercial for DLKW and Coca Cola projects for the World Cup.
More recently David took the internet by storm with a series of viral films he made while researching his first feature project, a comedy about the biggest UFO hoax of all time which is to be produced by Partizan Films. The films David made showed UFOs flying across the skies of Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Brooklyn. They clocked up over 3 million hits within their first two weeks on YouTube and were featured in the LA Times, on CNN and on Fox News. (via)
